My experience in the past and present with the school system around me has been poor, missing records, stressful registration and a whole lot more. Why can’t these files I’m carrying be digitized? Why do teachers or lecturers forget when they are to teach us? Why are schools not using modern technologies to solve the present problems with record?

Discovery

I started my research by getting to understand how the current school management works, how things are done in these schools. I found out that:

• School only make use of database software and other operations are done on paper

• School owners fully involved in the activities of schools feel the need to be in school environment every time to monitor the welfare of their institution

• Attendance and financial reports are done on paper and submit regularly to admins in charge for reviews

• Teaching and non teaching staffs often need to move around the school to communicate and collect things from each other as no platform connects them

I took a look at current products providing management services for schools, I used them and found a lot of issues but I narrowed them down to 2 core issues affecting them negatively.

Problems

Users are finding it difficult to onboard their school information on these products. If they eventually do, The product information lacks clarity, making it challenging to navigate and understand the products properly. Improving the clarity and navigational experience is crucial to ensure users can easily comprehend and explore these products.

Goals

My goal for this project is to enhance the onboarding experience for school and staff records and also to design a clear and concise representation of information across every screen within the product. This will ensure that users can easily understand and navigate the system, facilitating a seamless transition and usage of the platform.

Design process

I initiated the project by conducting thorough research and gaining a deep understanding of how school management functions in real-life scenarios. To gain further insights, I explored existing products that offer school management services. Analyzing my own experiences with these products, I focused on identifying and addressing the core issues I encountered, which became the basis for my design goals.

To visualize and iterate on my ideas, I began ideating using pencil and paper, sketching out the user flow. Drawing inspiration from various similar products and web design websites, I translated my sketches into interface designs. Starting with wireframes, I gradually refined the designs to create high-fidelity screens that were both visually appealing and usable.

Moving forward, I proceeded to prototype the screens and sought feedback from potential users. I carefully documented all the feedback received and made necessary alterations to improve the user experience. This iterative process ensured that the final product addressed the pain points identified during the initial stages, resulting in a more effective and user-friendly solution.

If this project goes live, it has the potential to make a significant positive impact on the educational sector. By providing an easy and efficient way for school owners to manage their institutions, it would address common challenges such as missing records, improve employee cooperation, and foster trust among stakeholders.

Working on this self-initiated project has been an engaging experience, allowing me to delve into the field of educational technology and management. I have gained valuable insights and enhanced my knowledge in user experience and interface design. I am enthusiastic about continuing my learning journey.

Moving forward, my next steps involve enhancing the features of the system. One key improvement would be to integrate personalized staff accounts, empowering employees to schedule and manage their own activities. Additionally, incorporating parent accounts would enable direct communication between parents and school staff, ensuring the welfare of their children. I have numerous other ideas for further enhancements, but for now, I'll conclude here.
